The most coveted email addresses today are likely the Gmail addresses. Since the inception of Gmail, which offered up to one gigabyte of on-line storage for your message, all other web-based mail services have been fighting an uphill battle. Getting a Gmail account was a difficult matter. The catch was that you had to be "invited" to sign up for a Gmail account. If your situation is like mine, I have never received a Gmail invite.
I have been informed that I did get at least one Gmail invite, but it ended up in my Junk Mail folder, and thus it was deleted without my knowing.
If you thought the war for web-based email is over, you might want to think again. To directly compete with Gmail, Yahoo! will be offering 1 gigabyte of email storage for all new and current users, commencing in May -- and you won't have to wait around for someone to send you an invite either.
I think a gigabyte of email storage is overkill. I have not had email quota issues with my Yahoo! mail account since junk mails were no longer counted against your storage quota. My current 250 megabyte quota is sitting around 1% capacity in my Yahoo! account.
Yahoo! mail still rocks. It may not be the most popular, nor offer the highest storage quota, but it does everything I need it to do.
As for MSN Hotmail, a few weeks ago I signed up for an account, and without disclosing that email address to anybody, I started immediately receiving spam in that account. I smell something fishy.
